Parksville Beach Festival Society Calls on Community Following Suspected Vandalism at Sand Sculpting Competition

PARKSVILLE, B.C. — The Parksville Beach Festival Society is deeply disappointed following damage to several sculptures currently being created for this year’s Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition.

The damage, believed to be the result of suspected vandalism, has required competing sculptors to spend valuable time repairing their works rather than focusing on completing their creations. These repairs are essential to ensure the sculptures can be enjoyed by visitors throughout the Exhibition’s five-week run. The incident has also affected the many dedicated volunteers and staff who have worked tirelessly all week to bring one of Parksville’s most cherished summer traditions to life.

Each sculpture represents days of dedication, creativity and extraordinary talent from world-class artists who travel to Parksville to compete. Behind the scenes, volunteers and festival staff contribute countless hours to ensure the event is a welcoming experience for the thousands of visitors and residents who come together to celebrate this unique festival each year.

“We are incredibly saddened that the hard work of our sculptors, volunteers and staff was affected in this way,” said Cheryl Dill, President of the Parksville Beach Festival Society. “This festival is built on community spirit. It belongs to everyone who volunteers, attends, sponsors and supports it. While this setback is disappointing, we know our community is stronger than one unfortunate act. The best way to support our artists, volunteers and everyone who makes this festival possible is to visit the exhibition, celebrate these incredible works of art and show our sculptors that their hard work is valued and appreciated.”

Despite the setback, the sculptors are working diligently to repair the damage and complete their sculptures in time for visitors to enjoy.

The Parksville Beach Festival Society is asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or who has information about the incident to come forward. A reward is being offered for information leading to the identification of those responsible.
