Festival Assistant Job Description

A Festival Assistant for Parksville’s 2018 Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition will assist the Event Manager and Board members with a variety of tasks pre, during and post event. The Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition will take place July 12-August 19, 2018, but this position will begin May 28th and carry through until August 22, 2018 (just over 12 weeks). This position is ideal for someone pursuing a career in event management, volunteer management, recreation or tourism. The successful candidate will work closely with a professional Event Manager to ‘learn the ropes’. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, strong knowledge of Microsoft office applications, social media and have knowledge of Parksville and the surrounding areas. The position involves full-time work, outdoors at Parksville Community Park. Hours will vary and once the Festival is underway will include weekends and evenings. To be eligible for this position, candidates must have been in University the preceding year and be returning to University in the fall, possess a class 5 Driver’s License, and have access to a car. Some desktop publishing experience would be an asset.

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Distributing posters and rack cards to local businesses
  2. Promoting and organizing Lunch with the Castles for seniors
  3. Liaise with onsite entertainers
  4. Interview the sculptors to post on Facebook/Instagram and website for event promotion
  5. Updating Facebook/Instagram to encourage engagement and more followers
  6. Pre-sell souvenir t-shirts to local sponsors who have expressed interest in purchasing them
  7. Creating invitations and nametags for sponsors, sculptors and board members
  8. Organizing other special event(s) for the Festival (Art in the Park, Light Up!)
  9. Answering questions from the public about the Sand Sculpting Competition & the area
  10. Overseeing the Sand Sculpting site when on duty
  11. Assisting with set-up and tear down of the event
  12. Providing visiting seniors groups with tours of the sculptures
  13. Assisting with merchandise sales
  14. Training and supervising volunteers
  15. Assisting committee chairs as required
  16. Other duties as assigned by the Event Manager


This position will pay $15/hr., plus 4% holiday pay. Mileage will be provided when using your own vehicle for work.
