2017 Sculptor Invitation

On behalf of the Parksville Beach Festival Society, it is my pleasure to invite you to apply to compete at the Quality Foods Canadian Open, a qualifier for the World Championships of Sand Sculpting. This year's competition will take place July 13-16, 2017.

The event will be held at the Parksville Community Park - 193 Island Hwy East, on the beach in Parksville, British Columbia, Canada.

As this is Canada's 150th birthday it only seems fitting that this year's theme should celebrate all things "Canadian!" The title of our theme is "Canada One Five 'O - Celebrating 150 Years. So brush up on your Canadian history and have some fun with it!

We invite sand sculptors to apply for one of fifteen solo spots and/or seven double spots available in the competition. Applications should be filled out online, between now and February 28, 2017. You may apply as both a Solo and a Double, but you will be selected for one or the other as Soloists and Doubles compete at the same time. Doubles should complete one application and include both competitors' names and accomplishments.

Applications will be evaluated by the Parksville Beach Festival Society Board of Directors in early March. All applicants (whether selected or not) will be notified by email on the same day and by no later than March 20th. Some of the items being considered when evaluating an application will be: whether you can speak and communicate in English; the number of times you have placed in the top 5 at your regional competitions (as the Canadian Open is a qualifier for the Worlds, we need to be sure you're sculpting at a professional level); whether you have been invited or advanced to the World Championships in the past; the quality of your work as determined by your competition placements; pictures of your work; the references you provide us; how easy you are to work with (as determined by our committee, or your reputation in the industry); and how much your application indicates it will cost our committee to pay for your travel expenses. If International applicants are able to minimize their travel costs by sharing their travel expenses with other North American competitions, this will help your application considerably. The maximum reimbursement for travel for all sculptors will be $1,000 CDN per sculptor, regardless of what it actually costs.

If you are selected we will ask for your top 3 preferred plots and will assign them once we have heard from everyone.

Prize money will be awarded as follows (in Canadian $'s):

  Soloist Double
First $2,500 $5,000
Second $2,250 $4,500
Third $2,000 $4,000
Fourth $1,750
Fifth $1,500

We will also include a Competitor's Choice award as voted by your peers, as well as a People's Choice award as voted by the public over 5 weeks. The winning double and soloist will receive $250 CDN per person for each competition.

We will be offering all sculptors a $1,000 CDN appearance fee if they do not place in the top 3 (doubles) or top 5 (soloists).

The Sculpting Schedule will take place as follows:
