Job Description

The Festival Assistant for Parksville’s 2017 Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition will assist the Event Manager and Board members with a variety of tasks pre, during and post event. The Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition will take place July 13-August 20, 2017, but this position will begin July 3rd and carry through until August 25th. This position is ideal for someone pursuing a career in event management, volunteer management, recreation or tourism. The successful candidate will work closely with a professional Event Manager to ‘learn the ropes’. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, strong knowledge of Microsoft office applications and social media, and knowledge of Parksville and the surrounding areas. The position involves full-time work, outdoors by Parksville Beach. Hours of work will vary and will involve evenings and weekends. To be eligible for this position, candidates must have been in full time university the preceding year and be returning to full time university in the fall, possess a class 5 Driver’s License, and have access to a car.

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Answering questions from the public about the Sand Sculpting competition & the area
  2. Overseeing the Sand Sculpting site when on duty
  3. Assisting with set-up and tear down of the event
  4. Liaising with sponsors, entertainers, onsite vendors and volunteers
  5. Updating Facebook/Instagram to encourage engagement and more followers
  6. Gathering the tokens for People's Choice Award and keeping tally of the daily results
  7. Providing visiting seniors groups with tours of the sand sculptures
  8. Assisting with merchandise sales
  9. Liaise with onsite entertainers
  10. Preparing rack card display and sponsor information and maintaining throughout event
  11. Assisting committee chairs as required
  12. Interviewing the sculptors to post on Facebook/Instagram and website for event promotion
  13. Others duties as assigned by Event Manager

Remuneration:

This position will pay $13/hr, plus 4% holiday pay. Mileage will be provided when using your own vehicle for work.
