Event DetailsThe event begins with the "pound up" on Thursday July 13th, when sculptors build and fill their forms. Once their forms are filled and the sculptor feels they are solidly packed, they may remove their forms and begin carving. The public can watch the carving take place beginning Friday, July 14 at 2 pm. Judging will take place on Sunday from 3-5 pm and the winners will be announced Sunday at approx. 5:30 pm. The gated exhibition will remain open to the public until Sunday, August 20th, from 9am-9pm daily. Voting for the ever popular "People's Choice Award" begins after judging has been completed.
Entry to the exhibition is by a suggested donation of $3.00 per person. Proceeds from your donation support several local non-profit organizations with approx. $50,000 per year being donated back to these volunteer community groups. Please note that we do not have the ability to accept debit cards at the Gate and due to our location in a public Park we do not have a bank machine on the premise. All the main bank branches are located in town within walking distance (Royal Bank, Coastal Community Credit Union, Scotia Bank, CIBC, TD).
Please note that the venue is a sand pit however we do our best to pack the sand down in order to make a harder surface. Wheelchairs are welcome and generally do not have much difficulty on the surface. We do have a wheelchair on site that is available for use on a first come first serve basis. For those with disabilities quieter periods for sculpture viewing are typically 9-11am and 6-9pm daily. Weekends tend to be busier.
Be sure to bring your camera to this amazing event because once the exhibition is over the sculptures are gone forever. And don't forget to bring your own buckets and shovels as you and your family are sure to be inspired to create a little sandcastle magic of your own after viewing the sand sculptures. Learn the tricks of the trade at the Coastal Community Sculpting Zone by watching free sand sculpting demos on Saturday and Sunday, July 15 & 16!
The 2017 Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition is located in Parksville's Community Park, next to the Lion's Venture Land Playground and Water Spray Park.
